Joshua's Costume

Here is what I have done so far on Joshua's costume.  I bought a long sleeve black leotard at walmart, some costume fabric at Joann's, the pants from Jc Penney, the little bling bling dots I also got at Joann's.  I love the dots because they are sticky, so I just pop them on where ever I want them to go and they seem to be staying on fantastically.

On the leotard I glued some fabric on the arms and some of the bling dots here and there.  Then I made the piece that goes over the leotard with costume fabric.  I glued & sewed it together.  I then cut some foam, covered it in the costume fabric, and attached it to the shoulder area on both sides.

For his pants, I just stuck on bling dots for the parts of the leg that will be showing.  I haven't decided yet, but I may also attach some sort of black cape to the back of his costume as well.

Here are the pants with the added bling bling dots:

Here is the leotard as I am starting to add the fabric stripes on the arms:

Here is his costume, pretty much finished:

This is a picture of what I was going by to make the costume:

It's not exactly the same, but I'm just trying to get it as close to it as I can.

Trina's Costume Boots

Trina's costume boots are taking me quite a bit of time to make.  They are coming out ok, but it's a lot of trial and error.  I am cutting out and coloring foam to look like scales, I have glued fabric to the bottom to try and get it to resemble a dragon, I have colored sequins red and glued them together to make eyes, etc...

Her boots are supposed to be similar to this:

The boots I got for her started like this:

What I have done so far (Not quite finished yet)

Here is a picture with them on (One almost finished & one not...obviously LOL)

Megan's Costume Boots

Here are Megan's boots for her costume.  For her boots I did some painting on the bottom half of the boots, made the stars out of fabric, & the top silver part of the boots are also fabric.  I glued on the stars, but they weren't staying very well.  I ended up having to hand sew the stars on.

Working on them:

Finished:

This is a picture of what I was trying to make the boots look like:

Joshua's costume boots

These are the boots to my son's costume.  I used fabric paint to paint them silver.  I used a tiny paint brush, so it took forever and about 3 or 4 coats.  I tried using a larger brush, but it wasn't coming out very even or good looking.  The smaller brush seemed to work the best.

Here are the boots before:

I cut the lace/string off of the back & then began to paint.  Here is the boot after the first coat of paint:

Here are the finished boots:

This is sort of what I was going for, but had to basically just settle for smooth silver boots LOL:

More talk about costumes

I have been working on the kids costumes off and on over the past few weeks.  I thought I would talk about some of the stuff I have got for them so far.  The first things that I bought were some belts that I found on clearance.  I happened to be walking through Walmart and spotted them.  They looked like the perfect addition for the costumes.  That same morning I decided to check out a local thrift store.  I don't normally go to thrift stores (though I may start going more regularly now), but thought I might see if they have anything I could use.  I was really surprised at all of the things they had there and for great prices.  Not everything of course, because they had a pair of really visibly used boots that they were selling for 50 bucks LOL, but I will explain about that later.

For the costumes I need to make special boots.  I really needed platform boots, but realistically that wouldn't work for small children.  I got really lucky that day at the thrift store and I found the perfect size boots to use for my son's costume,  a shirt, & fake leather jacket for my youngest daughter's costume.  The boots were 4 bucks, the shirt was 2 bucks, & the fake leather jacket was 3 bucks.   The pants for their costumes I purchased at JC Penney a couple of months ago, so I guess that was actually the first items I bought for the costumes and not the belts.  They are a fake looking shiny leather type pants.

I went to Joann's craft & fabric store & bought some costume fabric for parts of the costumes & boots, some fabric paint for the boots, sequins, & some little bling bling jewels.  I'm done with the 2 younger kids boots so far & almost done with 1 of my oldest daughter's boots.  I already had thread & lots of glue sticks that I have been using a ton of.

I went back with my oldest daughter to the thrift store a couple of weeks ago.  They had  some boots that looked like total rocker boots.  They were definitely in worn/used condition, but they would have worked well with the costumes.  I wore the tag on the boots said 4.95, but when we went to check out they rang up as 49.95.  I was like ummmm heck no, not for a costume LOL.  Come to find out they were these boots that sell for a lot of money.  I had checked on ebay and googled them and they run about 300 - 400 bucks a pair.  I still think it's crazy that they were 50 bucks at a thrift store though, especially since they were in very worn/used condition.

I went back to the thrift store again a couple of days later and found the perfect boots to use for my oldest daughter.  They ended up costing 4 bucks.

This years Halloween costumes

The costumes for this year are coming along.....
I find myself happy when I finish a piece of one of the costumes, but then realize I have so much more to do.  I am up to my ears in glue, sequins, bling bling jewels, paint, foam sheets, & fabric.  The glue is great except for the fact I am constantly burning myself & it doesn't stick well to somethings, so I end up having to sew it by hand anyway.  This is by far the most time consuming & effort I have put into making halloween costumes.

I keep asking myself, why I didn't just let them all just pick a cheap costume from like walmart or something LOL

Halloween is coming!

Halloween is coming & I have already begun to work on the kids costumes.  For the past 4 or 5 years now, I have tried to come up with a theme for my kids costumes.  They are really good sports and go along with my ideas.  I try to think of things that will tie them all in together.  The first year I started this they were all pirates,

 then Cavemen,

Super Heroes,

 & Zombies.

I love to get them dressed up and have my sister take a lot of pictures for me.  She then makes a cool Halloween card for me to send out to family & friends each year.

I already have my idea for this years costumes & have begun to work on them.  This has been by far the most work I have put into Halloween costumes.  I have done a lot already and still have a ton more to do.  I want the costumes to be great, but they also have to be affordable at the same time.  I have found some great deals at a local thrift shop on certain items which has been awesome.

Some of the things for the costumes I have made myself & some of it has been stuff that I have bought, but either painted, altered, or embellished in some way.  I am pretty happy with the way a lot of it is turning out.  This year the kids are going to be..............................................................................................

It's a Sunshyne day!

I decided to give this blog thing a try.  Will it last?  Probably not, but for now I'm giving it a shot.

Thinking up a name for this was interesting.  I always find it difficult to think up different names or passwords etc...  especially when it's on the spot.  This name actually came to me pretty quick because, I have used the name Sunshyne for email addresses & message boards for over 10 years now.  That and the fact that a Brady Bunch song came into my head at the time for some reason.

Most of the time I don't have a lot to say, but sometimes I would like to share things with family & friends and this might be an easy way to do it.  If I am able to write it down, then maybe I won't forget things.   I will call someone and the second we start talking, I have already forgot what the reason I called for was.

I don't really write well, it's just never really been my thing.  I am always getting punctuation incorrect or rambling in sentences, but hey that's me and if you like me you won't care anyway LOL.
